Plain-English guide
It is older and simpler than modern REST APIs, and it rewards developers who know its habits. Here is what every integration has to account for.
Requests go to your store's WebService.aspx address with an administrator login and an encrypted password string. Data comes back, and goes in, as XML rather than JSON.
A generic export names the data set (orders, products, or customers), the columns to return, and an optional filter, so an integration asks only for what it needs.
Generic exports return records in batches of 100. An integration that forgets to page through them will look fine in testing and miss data in production.
An export run without a filter remembers what it already returned and sends only new or changed records next time. Useful for syncing, and confusing if nobody knows it is happening.
Imports are posted to one of 13 tables per request, with orders sent together with their line items. Some import modes delete records, so imports are tested on a copy first.
The encrypted password string unlocks your store's data. We keep it in server configuration, never in page code, and use an admin account created only for the integration.

How the Volusion API works, what it can connect, access, limits, and cost.
It is Volusion's built-in way for other software to read and write store data. It exchanges orders, products, customers, and related records as XML through your store's web service address, and includes ready-made connections for StoneEdge and Endicia.
XML. Requests are sent to your store's WebService.aspx URL with an administrator login and an encrypted password string, and responses come back as XML. It is closer to an import and export service than to a modern REST API.
The API is available on qualifying plans, found in the admin under Inventory and then Volusion API. Plan names have changed over the years, so check your current plan or ask us to confirm before planning an integration.
Generic exports cover orders, products, and customers. Imports can write to 13 tables, such as products, categories, options, customers, addresses, orders with their order details, and tracking numbers.
Generic exports return records in batches of 100. The integration has to request the next batch until no more come back. Missing this is one of the most common reasons Volusion integrations lose data.
