Magento to BigCommerce Migration: Cutting Costs Without Losing Features
This article treats a Magento to BigCommerce migration as a total cost of ownership decision. The pressure usually starts with four line…
Read MoreSome stores outgrow a hosted platform: pricing rules Shopify Functions cannot express, attribute sets a metafield cannot model, several store views on one catalog, ERP integration that needs the whole platform exposed, or data that must live on your own infrastructure. For those, Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce is the right destination, and we move the catalog, customers, orders, content, and every URL to a Hyvä storefront with nothing lost.

Shopify to Magento
Shopify is a product with guardrails; Magento is a platform you shape. Moving between them is less a data transfer than a rebuild on a model that can hold what Shopify could not. Here is what ours covers, run by our Magento development team.
Everything on your Shopify store inventoried, then the first decision: Magento Open Source (free, self-hosted) or Adobe Commerce (licensed on GMV, with native B2B, page builder, Live Search, and support), and where it runs (managed Magento hosting, cloud, or Adobe Commerce Cloud). Mage-OS considered for stores that want the community edition.
Products and variants become simple and configurable products with attribute sets; metafields become attributes with the right input types; bundles, grouped, and downloadable products modeled where Shopify forced apps; collections become categories with rules. Counts reconciled.
Customers with addresses, groups, and tags, plus the full order history with statuses, invoices, and shipments, imported so reporting, lifetime value, and support history continue. Passwords never leave Shopify; a reset campaign is planned.
A Hyvä theme (Alpine.js and Tailwind), the 2026 standard for Magento storefronts, designed for your brand and built for Core Web Vitals; Hyvä Checkout where it fits. Luma is not scoped for new builds. See Magento web design.
Shopify discounts and Functions become catalog and cart price rules; companies and price lists become customer groups, shared catalogs, and tier pricing; Adobe Commerce B2B adds company accounts, approval workflows, quotes, requisition lists, and purchase orders.
Shopify Markets or separate stores consolidated into one Magento instance with websites, stores, and store views sharing a catalog: regions, currencies, languages, and brands from one admin.
Each Shopify app matched to a vetted Magento extension or built as a module: ERP, PIM, OMS, 3PL, search, subscriptions, reviews, loyalty, and marketplaces connected through REST and GraphQL that expose the whole platform.
A crawl and rankings baseline, every Shopify URL mapped to its Magento URL (your structure, your choice), metadata, canonicals, and schema carried across, URL rewrites loaded before launch, and Search Console watched daily afterward.
A rehearsed cutover with a delta sync, DNS at a quiet hour, caching and indexing tuned, security patched, backups and monitoring in place, training for your team, and support for the patching and upgrades a self-hosted platform needs.
Who should move
We are honest about this route. Adobe Commerce licenses run from roughly $22,000 to well over $100,000 a year, and a mid-market build carries a three-year cost of ownership measured in the hundreds of thousands once hosting, patching, and development are counted; most stores under $10 million are better served by Shopify or BigCommerce, and we migrate many of them that way. Magento earns its cost for the stores below.
Catalog and cart price rules, tier pricing, customer-group pricing, attribute sets, and product types that Shopify Functions and metafields cannot express cleanly.
Company accounts with hierarchies and approval workflows, shared catalogs, negotiated quotes, requisition lists, and purchase orders, natively in Adobe Commerce B2B.
Websites, stores, and store views for regions, languages, and brands on one catalog and one admin, beyond what Markets handles.
REST and GraphQL that expose the whole platform, and modules that can change core behavior, for ERP, OMS, PIM, and custom workflows that sit in the critical path of every order.
Your code, your data, your hosting, your region; no platform policy deciding what you may sell or how checkout works.
You lack a developer or a retainer for patching and upgrades, your catalog fits Shopify's model, or the cost of ownership exceeds what the extra control earns. Then BigCommerce or staying on Shopify is the better answer.
On every Shopify to Magento migration
Whatever the edition or the hosting, these hold on every Magento migration we run:
Another direction, or Magento from a different platform? We run these routes too, and the free audit builds your task list in two minutes.
Six steps from the edition decision to a hardened store: fit and cost first, the data model designed before anything moves, the Hyvä storefront and integrations built in parallel, SEO as its own workstream, a rehearsed cutover, and the monitoring and patching plan a self-hosted platform needs. Typically twelve to twenty weeks.
Inventory of the Shopify store, the Open Source or Adobe Commerce decision, hosting, the three-year cost of ownership, and a fixed price. Start with the free audit.
Attribute sets, product types, customer groups, price rules, and store views designed; a full test migration into staging; counts reconciled.
Theme designed and built, checkout configured, custom modules written for the features Shopify apps provided.
ERP, OMS, PIM, 3PL, search, and marketing connected and tested with real orders; the redirect map, metadata, and schema in place.
Performance tuning, security hardening, a rehearsed cutover with a delta sync, DNS at a quiet hour, sitemap submitted.
Daily checks for two weeks, training, and the ongoing patching, upgrades, and support plan.
Stores that replatformed with us and kept what mattered.

“If I could give 6 stars I would! I have worked with Mary and MAK Digital for many years now. They have performed the Affirm Financing integration on our company website as well as many other custom coding work through the years. Pricing is fair for the level of expertise they provide and they always come through with the project quoted and timelines promised.”

Send us your store URL. We will reply with an honest fit assessment, the edition and hosting we would choose, a three-year cost of ownership, and a fixed price.
Editions, cost of ownership, hosting, pricing rules, B2B, extensions, SEO, and timelines.
Open Source is free, self-hosted, and covers most catalogs with the community's extensions and Hyvä. Adobe Commerce adds native B2B, page builder, Live Search, product recommendations, cloud hosting, and enterprise support for a license priced on revenue, typically from the low tens of thousands a year up. We recommend one in the fit assessment based on B2B scope, integrations, and budget.
Beyond the migration: hosting sized for Magento, security patching and version upgrades, extension renewals, and a developer or retainer. Mid-market builds commonly carry a three-year cost of ownership in the hundreds of thousands, and more with an Adobe Commerce license. We put the number in writing before you decide; for many stores the honest answer is a hosted platform.
Pricing and catalog logic Shopify cannot model, enterprise B2B with company hierarchies and approvals, several store views on one catalog, integrations that need the whole platform exposed, and ownership of code, data, and hosting. Stores that need two or more of those usually find Magento worth its cost.
Hyvä, the Alpine.js and Tailwind theme that has become the standard for Magento 2 storefronts, with Hyvä Checkout where it fits; headless with Alokai or a custom GraphQL build when you need it. We no longer scope Luma for new builds.
Automatic discounts and codes become cart price rules; catalog-wide pricing becomes catalog price rules; Functions logic is rebuilt as rules or custom modules. Tier and customer-group pricing, which Shopify handles through B2B catalogs, is native in Magento.
Customer groups, shared catalogs, and tier pricing cover wholesale on Open Source; Adobe Commerce B2B adds company accounts with hierarchies and approval workflows, quotes, requisition lists, purchase orders, and credit limits. Shopify companies and price lists are mapped to whichever you choose.
Each is matched to a vetted Magento extension or built as a module, and its data migrated where the vendor allows. The audit lists every app and its replacement, including the ones that become native Magento features.
Not with the SEO workstream we run: a crawl and rankings baseline, one-to-one URL rewrites for every indexed URL in a structure you choose, metadata and schema carried across, and daily monitoring for two weeks. Badly redirected migrations lose 20 to 50 percent of organic traffic; ours are built to lose none.
Twelve to twenty weeks for most stores; longer with enterprise B2B, several store views, or ERP integration in the critical path. The Shopify store sells throughout and there is no downtime at cutover.
Yes. Self-hosted Magento needs patching, upgrades, and monitoring; our support plans cover them along with new features, and the plan is written into the proposal so the cost of ownership has no surprises.
