Magento to BigCommerce Migration: Cutting Costs Without Losing Features
This article treats a Magento to BigCommerce migration as a total cost of ownership decision. The pressure usually starts with four line…
Read MoreThere is a point where a WooCommerce store is held together by forty plugins doing jobs a commerce platform should do itself: tiered pricing, several storefronts, warehouse inventory, faceted search across a big catalog. Magento does those natively, and it is still open source you own. We model the catalog properly, move customers and order history, build a fast Hyvä storefront, keep WordPress for content if you want it, and redirect every URL.

WooCommerce to Magento
This is a step up in capability and in responsibility, so the first deliverable is an honest answer to whether you need it. When you do, the work is turning products stored as WordPress posts and plugin tables into a proper Magento catalog. Our Magento development team does it with the WordPress developers who know where your data lives.
What the store does today through plugins, what breaks or slows as it grows, and whether Magento Open Source, Mage-OS, or Adobe Commerce answers it. You get the running costs of each beside what you pay now, and a plain recommendation, including "stay and tune WooCommerce" when that is the right call.
A managed Magento environment sized to your catalog and traffic: PHP, the database, OpenSearch for catalog search, Redis and Varnish for caching, a CDN, staging, backups, and a deployment pipeline, or Adobe Commerce cloud when the license makes sense. Set up once and documented for whoever maintains it.
Variable products become configurable products with their simple children; global attributes become Magento attributes grouped into attribute sets; grouped, bundled, virtual, and downloadable products map to the matching Magento types; custom fields added by plugins become real attributes that filters, search, and feeds can use.
Customers with addresses and roles, and the order history with items, totals, and statuses, imported so service and reporting carry on. WordPress password hashes do not load into Magento as they are, so we either add a small module that verifies the old hash at first sign-in or plan a reset campaign, and recommend one after seeing your data.
A storefront built on Hyvä, the lightweight Magento front end that has been free and open source since November 2025, designed for your catalog and tuned to pass Core Web Vitals on mobile. Your WordPress theme does not carry over, but the brand and the page structure customers know do.
Role-based prices and wholesale plugins become customer groups, tier prices, and catalog and cart price rules that Magento includes. For company accounts, shared catalogs, quotes, and requisition lists, Adobe Commerce B2B or a vetted extension is configured and tested with real buyer accounts.
Each plugin is checked against what Magento already does: multi-store, multi-source inventory, layered navigation, promotions, and multiple currencies need no extension. What remains is matched to a maintained extension or built as a module, and ERP, PIM, shipping, tax, and email integrations are reconnected and tested with real orders.
Your articles and landing pages do not have to leave WordPress. Many stores keep it for content beside Magento, on the same domain, so editors keep the tool they know and no post changes its URL. Where one system is preferred, pages are rebuilt in Magento's Page Builder and posts are redirected.
Magento URL keys are set to stay as close as possible to your /product/ and /product-category/ paths, and every URL that still changes gets a one-to-one 301. Titles, descriptions, canonicals, and structured data move with the pages, launch day is rehearsed, and Magento support covers patches and upgrades afterward.
Why merchants move
Few stores should make this move, and we say that as a team that builds on both. WooCommerce is the lighter, cheaper platform, and for most catalogs it is enough. Magento earns its higher running cost when the business has become complicated: many thousands of SKUs with rich attributes, price lists per customer, stock in several warehouses, or more than one storefront. If that describes you, the plugins you keep adding are a sign you have outgrown the model.
Customer group pricing, tier prices, promotion rules, layered navigation, multiple currencies, and multi-source inventory are core features, tested together in every release.
Attribute sets, configurable products, and indexed search keep a catalog of hundreds of thousands of SKUs fast and filterable, where a posts-based catalog starts to strain.
Brands, regions, languages, and a wholesale site can each have a storefront while sharing one catalog, one customer base, and one admin.
Adobe Commerce adds company accounts with buyer roles, shared catalogs, negotiated quotes, requisition lists, and purchase order approvals, without a stack of wholesale plugins.
Magento Open Source carries no license fee, the Hyvä theme is free, and the code and data stay on infrastructure you control, so you keep the ownership you had on WordPress.
A few thousand products, simple pricing, one storefront, and a content-led business are WooCommerce's ground. If hosted simplicity is what you are after, BigCommerce or Shopify is the better route.
On every WooCommerce to Magento migration
Magento rewards preparation, so each WooCommerce store we move to it gets the following:
Not sure Magento is the right step up, or arriving at Magento from another platform? These are the routes beside this one, and the free audit lists the tasks for your pair of platforms.
Six steps, with more design up front than any other route: confirm the fit and the edition, stand up the environment, model and rehearse the data, build the storefront and reconnect the systems, launch behind tested redirects, and keep the platform patched. Twelve to twenty weeks for most stores.
The assessment, the edition and hosting choice, the cost comparison, and a fixed price. The free migration audit is a quick first read.
Hosting provisioned, attribute sets and product types designed, and the mapping from WordPress tables to Magento entities written down and approved.
Catalog, customers, and orders imported by script into staging, counts compared with WooCommerce, and the run repeated until it is clean.
The Hyvä storefront built, price rules and customer groups configured, extensions installed, and integrations tested with real orders.
URL rewrites imported and crawled, a load test, a final sync of customers and orders, and DNS changed in a quiet hour.
Two weeks of daily checks on rankings, errors, orders, and speed, then scheduled security patches and upgrades so the store stays on a supported release.
Merchants who moved to a platform sized for where their business was going, and kept what they had built on the way.

They have performed the Affirm Financing integration on our company website as well as many other custom coding work through the years. Pricing is fair for the level of expertise they provide and they always come through with the project quoted and timelines promised.”

Send us your store URL and plugin list. We will reply with a straight answer on whether Magento is worth it for you, the edition we would choose, and a fixed price.
Fit, editions, cost, hosting, product mapping, plugins, content, passwords, SEO, and timelines.
The usual signs: catalog pages and search slow down as SKUs pass the tens of thousands, pricing depends on several plugins that disagree, you need more than one storefront or warehouse, or every update needs a week of testing. If only one of those is true, tuning WooCommerce is usually cheaper, and we will tell you so in the assessment.
Magento Open Source is free and covers catalog, pricing, multi-store, and inventory. Mage-OS is a community-run distribution of the same code. Adobe Commerce adds B2B, content staging, customer segmentation, and Adobe support for a license that starts around $22,000 a year. Most stores coming from WooCommerce start on Open Source and add what they need.
More than WooCommerce. Budget for managed hosting with search and caching services, security patches several times a year, a version upgrade roughly every year, and a developer or agency on call. One published analysis puts typical mid-market upkeep at $50,000 to $150,000 a year. The assessment shows your numbers next to your current costs.
A variable product becomes a configurable product with a simple product for each variation. Global attributes become Magento attributes in an attribute set, which is what makes filtering, search, and comparison work across a large catalog. Custom fields from plugins become attributes too, so nothing is trapped in a serialized field.
Many are no longer needed, because Magento includes customer group pricing, tier prices, promotion rules, layered navigation, several storefronts, and multi-source inventory. The others are replaced by maintained extensions or a custom module. You see the full list, with each replacement, before you commit.
Yes, and many stores do. WordPress can run beside Magento on the same domain, so articles keep their URLs and editors keep their workflow, while Magento handles catalog and checkout. If you would rather run one system, we rebuild the pages in Magento and redirect the posts.
Not automatically; the two platforms store them differently. Because Magento is open, a small module can check the old WordPress hash the first time a customer signs in and then save it in Magento's format. Where that is not practical for your data, we run a reset campaign through your email tool.
Yes, when the URL work is done first. Magento lets us set URL keys close to your current paths, and anything that changes gets a one-to-one 301 loaded before launch. Metadata, canonicals, and structured data are carried over, and we compare rankings against a baseline every day for two weeks.
The Hyvä theme became free and open source in November 2025. It replaces Magento's older front end with a much lighter one, and well-built Hyvä stores pass Core Web Vitals comfortably. Hyvä Checkout and the Adobe Commerce compatibility packages are separate paid products, which we price only when you need them.
Twelve to twenty weeks for most stores, longer with enterprise B2B, several storefronts, or an ERP in the critical path. Projects start in the mid five figures and rise with catalog complexity, integrations, and custom modules. The price is fixed after the assessment, and it comes with the yearly running cost stated beside it.
