BigCommerce to Magento Migration for Stores That Have Outgrown SaaS

Contract pricing per customer, purchase-order approvals, several brands on one instance, or an ERP that needs the whole codebase: when BigCommerce cannot stretch that far, Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce can. We settle the edition with you, translate options and modifiers into Magento product types on paper first, build the storefront on Hyvä, set up hosting and patching, and cut over with BigCommerce still trading until the final sync.

BigCommerce to Magento

The Work Inside a BigCommerce to Magento Migration

Automated cart-to-cart tools move rows between databases. A Magento migration succeeds or fails on the parts they skip: the product-model translation, the B2B structure, the extension and integration parity, the redirect map, and the architecture you will run for the next five years. This is what we do.

  • Edition & Architecture Decision

Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce, or Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, chosen against your B2B, multi-store, content, and support requirements, with a hosting architecture (cloud, managed, or your own) sized for your traffic and catalog.

  • Product Model Translation

BigCommerce options, modifiers, and variants redesigned as Magento simple, configurable, bundle, and grouped products with attribute sets and swatches, documented and approved before migration so the catalog behaves the way your merchandisers expect.

  • Catalog, Customer & Order Migration

Products, images, categories, brands, pricing, inventory, customer accounts and groups, and order history exported through the BigCommerce API and loaded with validated import scripts, with counts and samples reconciled at every stage.

  • B2B Structure & Pricing

Companies, buyer roles, shared catalogs, contract and tier pricing, negotiable quotes, requisition lists, and purchase-order approval rules built natively on Adobe Commerce, or configured with vetted extensions on Open Source when that is the right fit.

  • Hyvä Storefront Design & Build

A storefront designed from your brand and built on Hyvä (Tailwind and Alpine), which loads a fraction of Luma's weight and hits Core Web Vitals on mobile; or a headless storefront on Adobe Commerce when multiple front ends are the goal.

  • Extensions & Custom Modules

Every BigCommerce app replaced with a vetted Magento extension or a custom module we write and test: search (Live Search or Elasticsearch), reviews, shipping rules, tax, marketing, and the custom features you could not build on SaaS.

  • ERP, PIM & CRM Integration

NetSuite, Dynamics, SAP, Acumatica, Akeneo, Salesforce, and warehouse systems connected through Magento's REST and GraphQL APIs or a middleware layer, with pricing, inventory, orders, and customers flowing the way your operations require.

  • SEO Migration & URL Rewrites

A rankings and crawl baseline, BigCommerce URL keys preserved wherever Magento's structure allows, the remaining URLs mapped and loaded as Magento URL rewrites, metadata and structured data carried over, and a two-week monitoring plan after launch.

  • Hosting, DevOps & Maintenance

Managed hosting or cloud set up with staging, deployment pipelines, caching (Varnish, Redis), monitoring, backups, and a maintenance plan for security patches and PHP and Magento upgrades, so leaving SaaS does not mean becoming a sysadmin.

The SaaS ceiling

What Magento Gives You That BigCommerce Cannot

BigCommerce's B2B Edition and multi-storefront features cover a lot of ground, and for many merchants they are enough. The stores that come to us for Magento have hit specific walls. If these are your walls, Magento is the answer; if they are not, we will tell you to stay.

  • B2B Workflows Built In

Adobe Commerce ships company accounts with hierarchies and roles, shared catalogs with per-company pricing, negotiable quotes, requisition lists, credit limits, and purchase-order approval rules, without a stack of apps.

  • Unlimited Storefronts, One Instance

Websites, stores, and store views for brands, regions, currencies, and languages share one catalog, one admin, and one license, instead of a subscription per storefront.

  • A Catalog Model Without Ceilings

Configurable, bundle, and grouped products, unlimited attributes, layered navigation, and tier pricing built for catalogs measured in tens of thousands of configurable SKUs.

  • Your Code, Your Roadmap

Custom checkout steps, pricing engines, product types, admin workflows, and integrations written as modules you own, deployed when you decide, not when a platform ships them.

  • Integration Depth

Full REST and GraphQL APIs, message queues, and direct database access when nothing else will do, for ERP, PIM, and warehouse integrations that SaaS webhooks cannot express.

  • Total Cost That Favors Scale

Past roughly a million dollars in revenue, hosting plus an Open Source or Adobe Commerce stack often costs less than BigCommerce's Performance plan (formerly Enterprise) plus the apps and storefronts you are paying for now.

Before we recommend Magento

The Magento Readiness Check

Magento rewards merchants who need it and punishes those who do not. Before we scope a migration we work through these questions with you; the answers decide the edition, the architecture, and whether the move makes sense.

  • B2B requirements listed: company accounts, contract or tier pricing, quotes, requisition lists, approvals, credit terms, punchout
  • Storefront count and structure: brands, regions, currencies, languages, and which share a catalog
  • Catalog complexity: SKU count, option and modifier structures, bundles, kits, and how they map to Magento product types
  • Integration inventory: ERP, PIM, WMS, CRM, tax, shipping, marketplaces, and the direction and frequency of each sync
  • App inventory: every BigCommerce app, what it does, and whether a Magento extension or a custom module replaces it
  • Hosting and operations: who patches, upgrades, and monitors, and whether managed hosting or Adobe Commerce Cloud fits
  • Edition decision documented: Open Source, Adobe Commerce, or Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, with the license cost in the budget
  • SEO baseline captured: crawl, rankings, indexed URLs, and the URL-key strategy for the new store
  • Team readiness: admin training, merchandising workflows, and the release process after launch

Other Migration Routes

If Magento turns out to be more platform than you need, or you are coming to it from somewhere else, these are the neighboring routes. The free audit is a quick first look at any of them.

Our BigCommerce to Magento Migration Method

Magento rewards planning: the architecture, hosting, and extension map are settled before data moves, the catalog is imported by script and validated, the store is built and performance-tuned, and launch is followed by a month of monitoring.

  • Requirements & Edition

B2B, multi-store, catalog, and integration requirements gathered; Open Source, Adobe Commerce, or Cloud Service chosen; hosting architecture designed; fixed scope and price.

  • Data Model & Mapping

Product types, attribute sets, customer groups, company structures, and URL keys designed on paper and approved before any data moves.

  • Platform & Integrations

Magento installed on staging with caching and pipelines, extensions and custom modules built, ERP, PIM, and CRM integrations connected and tested with sample data.

  • Migration & Storefront

Catalog, customers, orders, and content migrated and reconciled; the Hyvä storefront designed and built mobile-first; B2B pricing and workflows configured.

  • Testing & Performance

End-to-end order, quote, approval, and integration tests; load testing; Core Web Vitals and accessibility tuning; URL rewrites loaded and verified.

  • Go-Live & Operations

Delta sync, DNS cutover, sitemap submission, two weeks of monitoring, and the maintenance plan that keeps the platform patched and upgraded.

BigCommerce to Magento Migration Questions

Editions, hosting, B2B, the product model, cost, and what changes when you leave a SaaS platform.

Should we migrate to Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce?

Open Source fits most merchants who want control, a large catalog, and multi-store without a license fee. Adobe Commerce adds the native B2B module (company accounts, shared catalogs, negotiable quotes, requisition lists, purchase-order approvals), Page Builder, customer segmentation, Live Search, cloud hosting options, and Adobe support, for an annual license that runs into five or six figures. If B2B workflows are why you are leaving BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce is usually right; if you mainly need control, a large catalog, or multiple stores, Open Source with a few vetted extensions often is. We also evaluate Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, Adobe's SaaS edition, when you want Adobe's roadmap without running infrastructure.

Will our BigCommerce product options and modifiers work in Magento?

They will after translation, not by import alone. Magento models products as simple, configurable, bundle, grouped, and virtual types with attribute sets, which is more expressive than BigCommerce's options and modifiers but different. We design the mapping first: which option sets become configurable attributes, which modifiers become custom options or bundles, and how swatches, pricing, and inventory attach. That document is approved before migration, so the catalog behaves the way your team expects.

What happens to hosting, security, and upgrades after we leave SaaS?

They become your responsibility, or ours. Magento needs a properly sized host with Varnish and Redis, regular security patches, extension updates, and PHP upgrades on a schedule (PHP 8.2 reaches end of security support on December 31, 2026, and Adobe treats end-of-life PHP as a PCI risk). We set up managed hosting or Adobe Commerce Cloud, deployment pipelines, monitoring, and backups, and most clients keep us on a maintenance plan so the platform stays patched without their team running servers.

Can Magento run several brands or regions from one store?

Yes, natively. Magento's website, store, and store-view hierarchy lets one instance serve multiple brands, countries, currencies, and languages with shared or separate catalogs, pricing, and themes, on one license and one admin. This is one of the most common reasons merchants leave BigCommerce, where each storefront is another subscription.

Do customer accounts, groups, and passwords transfer?

Accounts, addresses, customer groups, and order history transfer. Passwords do not: BigCommerce and Magento use different hashing algorithms and hashes cannot be converted, so each customer resets their password on first login through a flow we design and announce. B2B companies, roles, and pricing are recreated in Magento's company structure from your BigCommerce customer groups and price lists.

Will the migration hurt our search rankings?

Not when the SEO workstream is done. We capture a baseline, keep your BigCommerce URL keys wherever Magento's structure allows so many URLs do not change at all, map the rest to 301 URL rewrites loaded before launch, carry over metadata and structured data, submit the sitemap, and watch Search Console daily for two weeks. Magento on Hyvä is also considerably faster than most BigCommerce themes, which helps rankings after the switch.

Is there downtime during the migration?

No. Magento is built, integrated, and tested on staging while BigCommerce keeps trading. At cutover we run a delta migration of the orders and customers created since the main load, switch DNS at a quiet hour, and keep BigCommerce read-only as a fallback.

How long does a BigCommerce to Magento migration take?

Longer than a SaaS-to-SaaS move, because the architecture, product model, integrations, and hosting are being built, not configured. A typical project runs twelve to sixteen weeks; complex B2B setups with several ERP and PIM integrations can run twenty or more. We give a dated plan after the requirements phase.

What does a BigCommerce to Magento migration cost?

Migration projects with a Hyvä storefront, product-model translation, extension and integration work, and SEO typically start in the mid five figures and scale with B2B complexity and integration count. After launch you pay hosting (from a few hundred dollars a month for Open Source to more for Adobe Commerce Cloud), the Adobe Commerce license if you choose it, and a maintenance plan. We quote a fixed price after requirements, and we tell you if the numbers do not justify the move.

Why Hyvä instead of Magento's default theme?

Because Luma is heavy and slow, and a migration is the wrong moment to inherit it. Hyvä replaces Luma's front end with Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, loads a fraction of the JavaScript, hits Core Web Vitals on mobile, and is far cheaper to customize. It has become the standard for new Magento storefronts, with a large ecosystem of compatible extensions, and it is what we build on unless a headless architecture is called for.
