Volusion to WooCommerce Migration: Own Your Store and Everything in It

On Volusion you rent the store. On WooCommerce you own it: the code, the data, the design, and the freedom to host it anywhere. For merchants who also want a proper publishing tool, WordPress is hard to beat. We bring your products, customers, orders, and articles across, build a fast theme, keep the plugin list short, and redirect every old Volusion address so the traffic follows.

Volusion to WooCommerce

What We Do to Move Your Volusion Store to WooCommerce

Leaving a hosted platform for one you run yourself means two jobs: moving the store, and setting up the things Volusion used to do behind the scenes, such as hosting, backups, and security. Our WordPress development team does both, so you are not handed a site and wished good luck.

  • Volusion Audit & Ownership Plan

Your catalog, customers, orders, articles, and integrations inventoried, along with a clear picture of what owning the store involves: hosting, updates, backups, and who looks after them. If you would rather not own that, we will suggest a hosted platform.

  • Managed Hosting & Security Setup

Managed WordPress hosting sized to your traffic, with SSL, a firewall, caching, a CDN, a staging copy, and nightly backups configured before any data arrives, and High-Performance Order Storage enabled for the order history.

  • Products, Options & Variations

Simple Volusion products become simple products. Products with options become variable products, each combination a variation with its own SKU, price, and stock, and WooCommerce places no cap on how many attributes a product can have. Child products join their parents, and images are copied from /v/vspfiles/ into the media library.

  • Customers & Order History

Customer accounts and addresses become WordPress users, and past orders are imported with their items and statuses so customers can view and reorder. Each customer picks a new password the first time they sign in, prompted by an email we prepare.

  • Theme Design & Build

A custom block theme built for speed on phones, with product, category, and checkout layouts your team can edit without code. See WooCommerce web design for the approach.

  • Articles, Pages & a Real Blog

Volusion articles and custom pages become WordPress posts and pages, properly categorized, with the editor and SEO tools that make publishing regularly realistic. Our content marketing team can take it from there.

  • Payments, Shipping & Plugins

Your gateway connected with no platform surcharge, shipping rates and tax configured, and the few plugins the store truly needs for reviews, email, and feeds chosen for their track record and documented, each with someone responsible for updating it.

  • URL Mapping & Redirects

Every ProductDetails.asp link, every -p/, -s/, and -a/ path, and every image URL worth keeping is matched to its WordPress address and served as a 301 from launch, with titles, descriptions, and structured data moved across.

  • Launch & Ongoing Care

A rehearsed switch with a final sync, two weeks of daily checks, a walkthrough of the WordPress admin for your team, and a care plan for updates, backups, and security if you want us to keep watch.

Why merchants move

What Stores Gain by Moving From Volusion to WooCommerce

The appeal is control. After years on a platform whose direction you could not influence, owning the store outright is attractive, and for the right merchant it is the best value on the map. It does come with chores that a hosted platform does for you, so we are specific about those before you choose.

  • It Is Yours

The site, the database, and the customer list live on hosting you choose and can move at will. No company's future decides yours again.

  • No Plan, No Cut of Sales

WooCommerce is free. You pay for hosting, a handful of plugins, and your card processor, and nothing rises because revenue did.

  • Publishing That Brings Customers

Guides, comparisons, and how-to articles sit beside the products on one domain, which is how many specialist retailers earn their search traffic.

  • Any Feature You Can Describe

Custom product builders, unusual shipping rules, membership pricing: on open code, the answer is a plugin or a few days of development.

  • Help Is Easy to Find

WordPress has the largest developer community on the web, so you are never tied to one agency, including ours.

  • What You Take On

Updates, backups, and security need a routine. In 2025, 91 percent of reported WordPress vulnerabilities were in plugins, so we keep yours few and current. Prefer to hand that off? BigCommerce or Shopify may suit you better.

On every Volusion to WooCommerce migration

Our Migration Standards

Every Volusion store we rebuild on WooCommerce leaves with these in place:

  • An ownership plan that says who handles hosting, updates, and backups after launch
  • Managed hosting with a firewall, staging, and tested nightly backups
  • Products, variations, customers, and orders reconciled by count against the Volusion exports
  • Images copied into the media library, with no links left pointing at Volusion
  • Every indexed Volusion URL redirected one to one from the first minute
  • Articles and pages moved into WordPress with categories and links in order
  • A documented plugin list kept as short as the store allows
  • A fast block theme passing Core Web Vitals on mobile at launch
  • A fixed price after the audit, and the Volusion plan cancelled only when you say

How a Volusion to WooCommerce Migration Runs

Six steps in six to ten weeks for most stores: plan what ownership means for you, prepare the hosting, move and check the data, build the theme and bring the content, switch over behind complete redirects, and settle into a care routine.

  • Audit & Ownership Plan

The inventory, the hosting choice, the care arrangements, and a fixed price. The free migration audit is the place to start.

  • Hosting & Foundations

WordPress and WooCommerce installed on managed hosting with security, caching, staging, and backups working before data arrives.

  • Data Migration

Products, variations, customers, and orders imported into staging and checked against the Volusion exports until every count matches.

  • Theme, Content & Plugins

The theme designed and built, articles and pages moved, and payments, shipping, tax, and the chosen plugins configured and tested.

  • Redirects & Switch-Over

The redirect map loaded and crawled, a final sync of orders and customers, and DNS changed at a quiet hour.

  • Care & Growth

Two weeks of daily monitoring, then scheduled updates and backups, with WooCommerce SEO ready when you want to grow traffic.

“Mary is the person you need to know and work with if you have a Volusion site. She is incredibly knowledgeable about all things Volusion and we couldn't have set up our store the way we wanted to without her, and it looks great! Thank you Mary and Mak Digital.”

  • Jeff Gawronski

    DormCo.com

“Mak Digital is the real deal! I have been in online retail since roughly 2005 and have worked with dozens of IT professionals. Not until meeting Mary and Mak Digital was I able to stop the carousel of developers. Our store DormCo.com has been under Mak's care since fall of 2014 and Byourbed.com was a customized store that was launched by Mak in 2016.”

Volusion to WooCommerce Migration Questions

Ownership, running costs, upkeep, product mapping, URLs, accounts, content, payments, timing, and cost.

Why choose WooCommerce over a hosted platform when leaving Volusion?

Choose it if you want to own the store and avoid a platform plan, if content is a big part of how customers find you, or if you need features a hosted platform would not allow. Choose BigCommerce or Shopify if you want someone else to handle hosting, security, and updates. Both answers are reasonable, and we help you pick.

What does WooCommerce cost to run?

The software is free. Expect to pay for managed hosting, a few premium plugins, card processing, and either a care plan or some of your own time for updates. For a small to mid-size store that usually comes to less than a hosted plan plus apps, and we give you the monthly figure in the ownership plan.

Who will keep the site updated and secure?

You choose: our care plan, your own team with the runbook we provide, or another WordPress developer. What matters is that someone does. Updates are tested on a staging copy first, backups run nightly, and a firewall filters traffic, all set up before launch.

How do Volusion options and child products map to WooCommerce?

Options become product attributes, and each combination that you sell becomes a variation with its own SKU, price, and stock level. WooCommerce does not limit the number of attributes, so products rarely need to be split. Child products are attached to their parent as variations.

Can we keep our old Volusion URLs?

Not the exact addresses, because they include .asp and .htm patterns specific to Volusion, but nothing is lost. WordPress lets us choose clean, readable URLs, and every old address is redirected to its replacement with a 301 that is live from the moment of launch.

Do customer accounts and passwords come across?

Accounts, addresses, and order history do. Passwords do not, so each customer sets a new one on their first visit, guided by an email sent at launch. Their past orders are there as soon as they sign in.

What happens to our articles?

They become WordPress posts and pages, which is a real upgrade: categories, tags, scheduling, authors, and proper SEO controls. Their old URLs are redirected, and from then on publishing is as easy as writing.

Which payment gateways can we use?

Almost any. WooCommerce has extensions for the major processors and many regional ones, and it adds no fee of its own. If you are happy with your current processor, we connect it; if not, we help you compare rates.

Is WooCommerce fast enough for our catalog?

For catalogs up to the tens of thousands of products on properly sized hosting, yes. High-Performance Order Storage and caching keep it quick. If your catalog is much larger or relies on heavy filtering, we will tell you during the audit and suggest a better fit.

How long does a Volusion to WooCommerce migration take, and what does it cost?

Most stores take six to ten weeks. The project cost depends on catalog size, design scope, the number of URLs to redirect, and integrations, and it is fixed after the audit. You also receive the monthly running cost in advance, so there are no surprises once you own the store.
