Does Your Schema Actually Work?

Structured data is how a page tells Google, shopping surfaces, and AI assistants what it is: this is a product, this is its price, these are its reviews, this is the company behind it. Most stores have some. Most of it is incomplete, and one missing property is enough to lose the rich result. Paste a page and see every schema node it carries, what Google requires that is missing, and which rich results it qualifies for.

Validate Any Page's Structured Data

Test the page type that matters: a product page for Product and Offer markup, a post for Article, the homepage for Organization and WebSite. We read the page's JSON-LD, check each node against Google's required and recommended properties, and list the rich results it is eligible for.

Free · no signup · reads JSON-LD (the format Google recommends). We save the URL and the types found to improve the tool and may follow up; see our privacy policy.

What to mark up

The Schema Types That Pay on an Online Store

Not every type earns a rich result, and not every rich result Google ever offered still exists. These are the ones that still show in results, feed shopping surfaces, or are read by AI assistants.

Product + Offer

Price, availability, and ratings in results and in Google Shopping's free listings. Requires name, and an Offer with price and priceCurrency; availability, image, sku, brand, and shipping and return details strengthen it.

AggregateRating + Review

The stars. Needs ratingValue with reviewCount or ratingCount on the product (or business), and reviews with a named author and a reviewRating. Self-serving ratings on your own Organization do not qualify.

Organization / OnlineStore

Your entity: name, url, logo, sameAs profiles, contact points, return policy. This is what AI assistants resolve your brand to, and it feeds the knowledge panel and logo in results.

BreadcrumbList

The path shown under the title in results. Each ListItem needs position, name, and item. Cheap to add and consistently displayed.

Article / BlogPosting

For posts and guides: headline, image, datePublished, dateModified, author, publisher. Feeds Top Stories, Discover, and the author signals AI engines weigh.

FAQPage and HowTo

Google stopped showing these rich results for most sites in 2023, but the markup is still the cleanest way to hand an assistant a question and its answer. Keep it where the content is real.

LocalBusiness

For stores with a location: address, telephone, hours, geo, and priceRange. Powers the local panel and map results.

WebSite + SearchAction

On the homepage: the site name Google displays and the sitelinks search box.

What the validator catches

The Mistakes We See Most

  • Offers without price or priceCurrency, or a price written as "$49.99" instead of 49.99
  • A theme's Product schema and an app's Product schema on the same page, with different values
  • AggregateRating with ratingValue but no reviewCount or ratingCount, so the stars never show
  • Review author as a plain string instead of a Person with a name
  • Article headline over 110 characters, or missing image and dates
  • Organization without logo or sameAs, so the entity never resolves
  • Invalid JSON in one block (a stray comma, an unescaped quote), which silently discards everything in it
  • The same @id used for two different things, or nodes with no @type at all

After the check

From Valid to Visible

Passing the validator is the floor. Here is how we turn clean markup into results and citations.

  • 1. One graph, in the theme

Schema belongs in the template code, generated from the real product, order, and content data, not pasted into a plugin field. Our developers build it into the theme so it stays in step with the catalog.

  • 2. Entity first

Organization, WebSite, author, and brand nodes with stable @ids that every page references, so Google and AI engines resolve your business to one thing.

  • 3. Templates, not pages

Product, category, article, FAQ, and breadcrumb markup fixed once per template, validated before release and checked again after platform updates, as part of our SEO services.

  • 4. Measured in Search Console

The enhancement reports (Products, Merchant listings, Breadcrumbs, Reviews) are watched monthly, with impressions on rich results reported next to rankings and revenue.

Structured Data Questions, Answered

Errors versus warnings, JSON-LD versus microdata, and why valid markup still may not show.

What is the difference between an error and a warning?

An error is a property Google requires for that type; without it the rich result is ineligible. A warning is a recommended property: the markup still works, but adding it makes the result richer or more likely to show. Fix every error on a template; fix the warnings that match the data you actually have.

Why does the validator only read JSON-LD?

JSON-LD is the format Google recommends and the one every modern platform and plugin emits. If the page also has microdata or RDFa, the result notes it, but those formats are harder to keep correct and we migrate them to JSON-LD when we rebuild templates.

My markup is valid. Why do I not see a rich result?

Validity is one of several conditions. Google also needs the page indexed, the markup to match visible content, the type to be one it still shows (FAQ and HowTo were retired for most sites in 2023), and enough quality signals on the page. Search Console's enhancement reports show what Google detected and whether it chose to display it.

Does structured data help with AI search?

Yes, and increasingly. Assistants and AI Overviews use entity markup to confirm who you are and product markup to quote prices and availability; our AI visibility scan grades those signals specifically.

Can I just use a plugin?

Plugins generate generic markup from fields and often duplicate what the theme already emits, which produces conflicting values. They are fine as a start; a store that depends on product rich results needs the markup generated from the catalog in the theme, validated per template.

How much does fixing structured data cost?

A per-template fix on an existing store is a small, fixed-price project, usually one to three weeks depending on the platform and how many templates carry markup. It is also included in our SEO programs, where it is one of the first things done.

Want It Fixed in the Theme?

Send us the page you validated. We will reply with what is wrong per template, what each fix earns, and a fixed price.
